Apparently he was a former outlaw who had been captured and assigned by the government of his country to go after his former gang, he joined the guild to help get info on them and track them down in return for a full pardon, but after the job was done they disposed of him. The Guild help "demolish" this old government and it has currently formed as a new republic. They help out with his family from time to time.
